Sam Shortt
Director
Sam has lived in Ottawa since 2005 and is a lawyer at Nelliganlaw where he specializes in personal injury litigation.Â
Before becoming a lawyer he had extensive experience in family practice and urgent care medicine in Kingston and Ottawa. He taught in the Departments of Family Medicine and of Community Health and Epidemiology at Queen’s University, and served as Director of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research at Queen’s for a decade. As a family physician he developed an appreciation for the importance of the early years of child development and the importance of ensuring adequate support and resources for parents. Â
In 2007 Sam accepted an executive position at the Canadian Medical Association as Director of the Office for Public Health. One of his first tasks was to participate in the organization’s leadership role for the creation of the Child and Youth Health Charter. This declaration was signed in 2007 at the Child Health Summit by the CMA, Canadian Paediatric Society and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.Â
He and his wife are the proud parents of two sons and the equally thrilled grandparents of two preschoolers. Outside work activities he is passionate about Alpine skiing and enjoys cycling, kayaking, reading good thrillers, and travel.Â
